Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean (Studies)
My name is Ahmed Omer, and I am a second year student at Queen¿¿s University. I am writing this appeal in order to drop the courses RELS161 and GNDS215 after the deadline. There have been many aggravating and extenuating circumstances over the course of the year which have made it very difficult for me to succeed academically in these courses.
This year, I have had multiple people close to me pass away suddenly. About halfway through the Fall term, a close friend of mine passed away in a car accident. Following this, I found it extremely difficult to focus on my school work and decided it would be better for me to come back in the Winter as a part-time student in order to concentrate on my grades. At first this went well, however early on in the Winter term a family friend also passed away, followed shortly by my aunt. This became an extremely difficult and emotional time for myself and put great stress on me, my family, and my grades. Even until now, all of these passings still greatly impact me.
On top of this, I have had multiple issues at home with my family which put lots of mental stress on me. One of these being my younger sister¿¿s illness. She has been very sick over the past few years with an immune issue. The high severity of her sickness constantly had me worried for her well being, and my school work suffered due to my split focus.
Lastly, I have been working almost full-time in order to pay for living expenses, and these shifts can at times go late into the night, affecting my performance in class in the next day. Though this is has had the least impact on my academic success in comparison to the ones mentioned above, it was still quite demanding. Though I attempted to focus on doing well in class to the best of my abilities, the mental emotional stress that all of these events had on me were too much to handle and I do not believe that my marks will be salvageable at this point in time. Therefore I sincerely hope that my request to drop RELS161 and GNDS215 after the deadline will be thoughtfully considered.
Following this year, I do not expect to return immediately to Queen¿¿s, as I plan on taking a year off from post-secondary education in order to reevaluate my path and decide on what I would like to do in the future. This will give me lots of time to concentrate on my mental health and regain my academic focus, which has been shaken this year due to the extenuating circumstances listed above.
Thank you for your consideration,
Ahmed Omer
