Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,

My name is Abbigail Jacobs (20216052), and I am a second-year student. Since September of this semester, I have been dealing with a lot of mental health issues, which have only gotten worse, which also led me to be diagnosed with several mental illnesses. With this occurring, I have been seeing a psychologist (not with Queen??s, but one in Kingston that I found was more suitable to my needs). I have been having a lot of issues getting out of bed and finding the mental capacity to solely focus on my studies. My once positive mindset is now nothing but a negative and sad one. With that, my academics have taken a hard hit and I found myself extremely behind and unable to complete the work for my instructors. I have been in contact with a few of my instructors, and we have worked out an alternative way for me to finish my courses successfully. In all my courses, I do not have the amount of motivation or diligence I know I can have, but my declining mental health has really stopped my brain from being able to function when it is placed in an academic mindset.

Saying this, I have been speaking to an academic advisor and she guided me to this option, and I truly have thought about it thoroughly and I believe it is the best thing for not only my mental health but for my future here at Queen??s University. With saying that, this is my appeal to drop my LAW 201 course, which is instructed by Hugo Choquette. This course has been causing me an immense amount of stress that I have do not have the capacity for and I do not think that I can succeed in this course whatsoever, on top of the work I must catch up on with my other 4 courses. This specific course was also one I took on a whim and has no impact on me as far as my career choice and was just simply chosen as an elective. I am also aware of how late it is into the semester, but this is truly what is best for my well-being and future. With what I am going through, I have not been able to see the potential that I have as a student since September and I am willing to do anything to get myself back to normal again, and this means that dropping this specific course is necessary for me.

My student email is 19acj9@queensu.ca, feel free to contact me.

Thank you in advance.

Sincerely,

Abbigail Jacobs
