Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,

My name is Abbigail Jacobs (20216052), and I am a second-year student. Since September of this semester, I have been dealing with a lot of mental health issues, which have only gotten worse, which also led me to be diagnosed with several mental illnesses. With this occurring, I have been seeing a psychologist (not with Queen??s, but one in Kingston that I found was more suitable to my needs). I have been having a lot of issues getting out of bed and finding the mental capacity to solely focus on my studies. My once positive mindset is now nothing but a negative and sad one. With that, my academics have taken a hard hit and I found myself extremely behind and unable to complete the work for my instructors. I have been in contact with a few of my instructors, and we have worked out an alternative way for me to finish my courses successfully. In all my courses, I do not have the amount of motivation or diligence I know I can have, but my declining mental health has really stopped my brain from being able to function when it is placed in an academic mindset.

With saying this, this is not my first appeal to drop a course this late into a semester. I appealed to drop my LAW 201 course, and it was granted, and I couldn??t be more grateful for it. However, I have been having immense issues with myself and I have not been able to grapple at enough energy to write this appeal (hence the timing of it). I have been speaking to my psychologist more than normal and she has become worried about me and has recommended I appeal to drop my RELS 252 course. My instructor is Chris Coome. He has been more than cooperative with my struggles, and I went to his office and met with him to arrange when I write the midterm that I missed and that was last Friday (December 3rd). However, when I got there and started writing the exam, I began to blank out and I started to overheat, and my heart rate went up ?? then I realized I was having a panic attack. I studied for 7 days straight for this midterm, and it was like I never studied. My anxiety took over and my instructor suggested I drop the course because I realized what my boundaries were at that point. In fewer words, this is my appeal to drop my RELS 252 Mysticism course. I am aware of the repercussions that may arise with this, however, this is what is truly best for my mental health and well-being.

My student email is 19acj7@queens.ca, feel free to contact me.

Thank you in advance.

Sincerely,

Abbigail Jacobs
