Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Jenn Stephenson,

Please accept my letter in order to appeal to drop the following courses:

Pols 310
Pols 331
Pols 327

My request to drop these courses late is due to extenuating circumstances involving my mental health for the last four months. In September, I started to fall behind in all of my courses and although I am able to receive academic accommodations, I was unable to meet academic deadlines successfully. I was trying to manage side effects from medication and struggling with depression. I was unable to focus enough to complete my schoolwork. My mental health affected by physical health, my sleep schedule, my relationships and my academics became unmanageable. I believed that I could pull myself together which is why I did not drop the courses prior to the deadline. I reached out for longer extensions, sought counselling through the Queens Wellness Centre, Psychological therapy, care of physicians at home and through a walk-in clinic in Kingston. I have been referred to a psychiatrist, resolved my medication reactions and have family support. Moving forward, I will continue therapy and I feel confident that I will successfully complete my Winter term and have supports in place to manage my mental health and my academic success. I will utilize Queens resources such as SASS and I will retake the courses I am appealing to drop in the Summer as well as next fall.
