Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Studies) Bénard:

I am appealing to drop CISC271 (Winter 2015) past the add/drop deadline due to extenuating circumstances related to mental health and previous difficulty with the course.

In the past, I have sought counselling at Queen's HCDS for a mental health issue that necessitated a change of schools and degrees. I previously attempted to complete CISC271 two years ago, and in spite of my seeking out academic help, I struggled in the course. At that point in time, I dropped the course prior to the deadline and changed degree plans to one that did not require it.

Due to course scheduling and conflicts, I ended up requiring CISC271 to substitute for another requirement. However, the fact that I struggled in previous attempts has not changed, and I am doing poorly in the written examinations. I did well enough prior to the drop deadline that I felt that I could pass, but in light of the marks that I have received, I do not feel I can achieve a passing grade. The stress of doing so poorly in this course has negatively affected my deteriorating mental health, and increasingly of late, I have had difficulty with finding motivation to continue.

As for academic plans moving forward, I am in my final undergraduate term at Queen's University and have already applied to graduate. I have spoken to the School of Computing's program assistant and an academic advisor, and together we have worked out that I can, in fact, graduate successfully in Spring 2015 with a different plan. This plan does not require CISC271, and since I will meed all the requirements to graduate with said plan by the end of the term, I have filed an academic change form with the Faculty of Arts and Science.

As well, I have sought help from the CISC271 course coordinator, who has said that he will support my efforts as best as he can to both drop the course and to do as well as I can given the current state of things. In addition to the academic and administrative side of this plan, I am seeking counselling at Queen's to address with my mental health issues.

Until a decision regarding my appeal to drop CISC271 (Winter 2015) has been reached, I will continue to try my best. If you have any questions, I will try to clarify and I thank you in advance for your consideration.

Sincerest regards,
Susan Hwang
