Petition Letter: To Whom It May Concern:
My name is Jack Kerr and I am currently enrolled in first year general sciences here at Queen's University. I feel that I have been on the receiving end of an extenuating circumstance that has been debilitating to my academic performance and therefore I am requesting Aegrotat standing in Chem 112.
The timeline of my extenuating circumstance is from late February (week of February 23rd) and is currently ongoing.
I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis last June and with the use of medications was able to keep symptoms to a minimal for all of first semester as well as the first six weeks of second semester. However in late February my colitis 'flared up', making my colon severely inflamed. About a week into my recovery, things took a turn for the worse and I became considerably ill. I was unable to attend any classes from March 2nd to March 20th due to my inability to leave my bed. I lost 15 of my body mass before it was finally determined I had a rare bowel infection. On March 27th I started my fourth different medication treatment and as I write this letter I am finally starting to feel a little better. I have been consulting with Dr. Billing at LaSalle frequently over the month of March and I have appointments with the IBD specialists at Hotel Dieu Hospital in the coming weeks.
The impact of this extenuating circumstance on my academic studies has been considerable. Being unable to attend lectures or lab activities for the majority of a month left me very far behind. In the majority of my classes, lectures are not recorded so I was unable to view missed material. I missed the majority of my assignments and labs in all my classes. Even in my room I was very limited as I could only do short stints of work before feeling exhausted and ill.
In summary the reason I am applying for Aegrotat standing in Chem 112 is because I missed a considerable portion of the semester due to a debilitating illness and am still just beginning my recovery. It was recommended to me to seek Aegrotat standing in my some of my classes and after speaking with all my other professors and course coordinators I have either made other arrangements for my exams or feel comfortable writing them.
