Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
My name is Kira Liu and I hope this letter finds you well.
I am a second year student from British Columbia and I wish to get approval to drop Politics 250 after the deadline. The reason being is that there were unexpected family issues back home and I have decided to fly home as soon as possible.
My family went on a trip to China for the past weeks and last Tuesday March. 24th, My dad texted me that my brother is extremely ill and is in the hospital for emergency treatments. After getting a couple updates on his condition, they found that it is serious lung inflammation and he needs to be treated right away and was not able to fly back with the family as originally planned.
On Thursday March. 26th, my mom told me that they will be getting a divorce because she discovered that my father have deceived their relationships for seven years. My mom also said that she will be flying back to BC in two days. I was really worried, shocked and depressed. At the same time I had so many questions. I've been calling my house back in BC as well as my mother's cellphone and texted her, she did not respond or get back to me once.
I am really worried for her well-being as well as my sick 14 year-old brother and my 7 year-old sister. I do not even know where my mom is right now, and if my sister flew back with her or did the rest of my family stay with my brother in China. This all happened so sudden and unexpected and I want to go back home as soon as possible because my family have always been my top priority.
I decided to drop Politics 250 because I was not able to manage academically for the past days and did not manage to finish my final assignment that is due March. 30th. Furthermore, my exams are all fairly early except for Politics 250, which is on the 22nd of April. I will need to leave as soon as possible therefore, if I drop Politics 250, I will be able to leave 6 days earlier.
Even if it is just 6 days, by physically being there could possibly make a difference and I do not wish to miss any opportunity in doing so.
I have considered transferring back to BC and supporting my family, but denied the idea because it was too rash and I will just be stressing out everyone and myself more. My decision is to drop Pols 250 now, and declare a Politics minor instead of a major. I will major in Religious Studies because I have fulfilled the requirements and am interested in the course material. I do not need to take an academic break semester.
Whether or not this appeal is successful, I will not be writing my Politics 250 final exam and will be flying home. However, I truly hope that you may consider and give permission, because in doing so I will not be put on academic probation which means my third year will be less stressful and it will mean a lot to me.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Sincerely Yours,
Kira
