Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: I have realized that I should have dropped a course during the period in which an action is available. The course of subject is Continental Philosophy, of which I have currently completed no assignments for nor attended any classes. This is due to the method of instruction which raised my anxieties to participate in the course, which have only grown since I have missed the entirety of the course.

During the online portion of the semester the professor had posted no information, lectures, or due dates on his OnQ beyond a large text document which contained the entirety of the chapter. This method of instruction is not compatible with my learning style, and at the time I had poor mental health which further inhibited my motivation. As of now I have missed out on a large enough portion of the course resulting in the case that it would make it impossible to pass.

I have had ongoing mental health problems which have been gradually improving, but yet under several circumstances and trauma I have been dealing with for the past three years, motivation has remained quite difficult to find. Recently I have received an academic accommodation which allows for 7 days of leniency past the due date, which has greatly helped me achieve the grades in which I am able to. However for this accommodation to take place I must be aware of the due date of the assignment, which was not provided, nor any supplementary information beyond large text documents containing all of the information required for the class. Such circumstances were similar in my other course that I dropped this semester, and if I had the foresight that such a teaching structure would persist in this course, I would have dropped it.

I must say that this is the only course this semester in which I have had this problem, besides a few full year courses at the end of last semester in which the same events occurred when I entered a depressive episode.

I am regretful of the timing of such an appeal, but through contact with my academic advisor I am informed that this is the correct path in which to resolve this problem.
