Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,

My name is Ayden Jackson, and I am a third-year student in the Global Development plan. This letter is to formally request an academic appeal for my winter 2022 courses (i.e., CISC151, DEVS352, and DEVS340). This academic appeal is in response to an unexpected and inadvertent mental health issue that I experienced in mid-February that impacted my ability to fulfill my academic and athletic commitments. In mid-February, I experienced an episode of psychosis which was attributed to a variety of stressors. This psychotic episode prevented me from attending classes, submitting assignments, attending basketball practice, as well as complicated housing accommodations. Upon this episode, I was hospitalized, prescribed anti-psychotic medications, and placed on medical leave. Since this leave, I have made considerable progress in returning to normal activities through support from the university and an early-psychosis intervention team at Hotel Dieu. Despite being placed off medical leave on the week of March 28th, I am not confident that I have the capacity to fulfill the responsibilities required to complete my winter 2022 course load over the summer terms, nor am I certain that I want to remain in the plan that I am currently enrolled in. Thus, I am requesting an appeal, so I can defer my winter 2022 courses without academic penalty. If this academic appeal is granted, I plan to submit a tuition fee appeal.
