Petition Letter: To the Dean??s associated:
I am writing to appeal dropped courses after the calendar date and the withdrawal for one year from Queen??s University. Throughout my academics, I have consistently undertaken difficulties with focus, time management, mental health, emotional health, and spiritual health. At the start of my second year, I overestimated my ability to handle the coursework again.
Although I have indeed performed poorly during my time at Queen??s, this past semester, I have managed to extend my search into different resources to assist me with my academic performance and overall self-managing behaviours. I have made a turn for the better through prescribed medication, QSAS, SASS, and various other forms of support.
As of late, my academic performance has vastly greatened. I have created my academic plan to succeed and am determined to continue my post-secondary education for knowledge, wisdom, and opportunity. Currently, I am under academic probation, which means I will have to withdraw from Queen??s University if my GPA is under 1.6. What is unfortunate is that I strongly do not believe that my current GPA is not a correct reflection of my capabilities as a student. That is why I am appealing to drop courses and the deference of withdrawal. I have chosen to reduce my course load to four courses per semester and have successfully obtained academic accommodations to assist me with my learning disability.
To ensure I catch up on my coursework and perform strongly, I have decided to drop all my efforts on ANAT 100; this and the troubles I have experienced are why I have decided to appeal to drop the course. My difficulties have been prominent throughout my entire life. With the knowledge of being under academic probation, I know that my previous failed courses also do not accurately represent my capabilities.
I am confident that I can overcome my failures and prevail to become a strong, resilient, and capable individual. If the potentially dropped courses still lead to a required withdrawal for some reason, I would like to appeal the requirement to withdraw. I am writing to you with these two academic appeals in mind for this singular purpose. I hope for the best, but I understand this situation is not in my hands, and I sincerely appreciate the consideration in reading my appeal.
Best,
Yoshi Gomez Gutierrez

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: Academic Demands
Did I have difficulties with the course content?
- I would mostly not have any difficulties understanding the course content itself. The issue was more profound; I had problems engaging myself with the course content.
Did I find it hard to follow along in lectures, understand the required reading, or complete coursework?
- I found it incredibly difficult to do these things. With a learning disability, I found it incredibly hard to focus during lectures, required readings, and coursework.
- I have managed to remedy these issues by reducing my course load to four courses per semester, attending office hours, Student Academic Success Service appointments, registering accommodations with Student Accessibility Services, and prescribed medication. I intend to accumulate resources to succeed as I continue my education consistently.
Academic Interests
Did I find most or all my course work extremely onerous, to the extent that working on my studies was less fulfilling/interesting than I had anticipated?
- My time at queen??s university has been highly insightful regarding how I want to shape my life. At times, the work does become quite bothersome and tedious, but I understand that items of significance, such as my education, are designed to be essential and not easy. I have also been continuously finding more effective methods of structuring my work life and putting in more hours every day.
Academic Skills & Work Habits
Did I find it hard to manage my time, prepare for exams, present material, or complete written assignments?
- I have consistently experienced difficulties with time management and deadlines. I have finally managed to manage myself and drastically increase my academic performance since my treatment started.
Did I tend to miss classes, avoid my readings, or fall behind on my coursework?
- I would sometimes miss classes and avoid readings, although I consistently fell behind on coursework. With my prescribed medication, emotional support, and a more determined mindset, I have managed to catch up on my coursework and get ahead at times. Therefore, I have been left with a vital purpose and optimism that I believe will allow me to succeed in my academic endeavours.
Did I find it difficult to balance my academic and nonacademic activities?
- At times, balancing my academic and nonacademic activities was challenging. Throughout my time at Queens, I have experienced a significant number of neurotic episodes due to the difficulties of my coursework and the stressors of my non-academic life. I have sought out resources that have helped me become a more robust and resilient student, which is why I have begun to balance my academic activities stably.
Personal Circumstances
Have I experienced extraordinary situational demands that prevented you from succeeding?
- During the Covid-19 pandemic, I had to relocate to the United States because my family had finally been accepted as permanent residents. I was in an environment where I had no friends, daily outings, etc. In short, I was isolated. This worsened my mental health to levels that I had never witnessed before. When I received my first year??s GPA, I was devastated. I feel that my first year has begun my spiral to failure; paired with my learning disability, I underwent a challenging and dismal path. This led me to ask friends, loved ones, and the internet for help. With all the mentioned solutions and assistance I have come across, I now know I have the facilities to exceed expectations and become a phenomenal individual, not only in academics.
Financial Resources
Do I have the financial resources I need to support myself at university?
- Yes, I have the financial resources to support myself at Queen??s University.
Do my hours of work impede my ability to manage my academic load?
- I am no longer working, and therefore my work hours will not impede my ability to manage my academic load.
