Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Associate Dean (Academic),
My name is Zachary Garlock, and I am a first-year student at Queens University. I am contacting you regarding an academic appeal. I would like to have two courses that I took in the first term (2021-22 school year) removed from my transcript. These courses are GPHY 102 Physical Geography and HIST 104 Pre-Confed Canada.
I am appealing these courses based on extenuating circumstances. Specifically, I have been experiencing anxiety for much of the school year. This was diagnosed by my family physician on December 15, 2021. I have attached her diagnosis as part of the appeal process. I believe the anxiety started 6-8 weeks into the school year and has continued since. I found this time to be very stressful and challenging. The anxiety diagnosis effected my ability to carry a full course load. This led to these two courses suffering. It was not until I reached out to my doctor and was diagnosed that I began my ongoing treatment for anxiety.

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: Since my diagnosis in mid December 2021, I have taken the following steps to address my anxiety. I have:
1) I have had multiple meetings with my family physician regarding my anxiety with more still to come (ie booked April 27th, 2002 for a follow-up)
2) I called the Queens student Help line
3) I have engaged in PASS support
4) I have engaged in Academic counseling
5) I am working on changing my study habits. Specifically, I have more actively sought out support from TA and peers.
6) I began utilizing coping mechanisms such as exercise
As I take these steps, I am still very much experiencing my anxiety. The pressure of university, being away from home, the pandemic, and a general uncertainty with respect to the future has me worried. I am hopeful that these steps will better set me up for academic success going forward.
I thank you for your consideration.
