Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,

I am writing to you to appeal the pass/fail stipulation on the CISC 101 final exam. I took this course as an elective out of interest in learning something new and becoming a well-rounded candidate in job applications. I'm writing to you in hopes that you will waive the pass/fail stipulation so that it won't be reflected on my transcript and I can pursue other opportunities in the computer science department. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to explain my circumstances.

I admit that my final grade was not up to the standards I hold for myself, and it reflects poorly on my work throughout the semester. Going into the final exam, I had an A- in the course, which represents 59% of the course. Furthermore, I misinterpreted the exam time as all my other online commerce exams were Universal Design for Learning. This misinterpretation impacted my ability on the final exam as I take Vysane every morning at 8 am, which allows me to concentrate and have energy throughout the day. Although Vysane provides me energy and attention, the effects ware off past 6 pm, which impacted my ability to do well on the final exam scheduled for 7 pm. When the effects wear off, I become increasingly fatigued and unable to concentrate on a single task. I am deeply ashamed of the fact that I have to take medication, and I try to keep it from my family and friends. I understand now that I should have conveyed this to my professors and the academic department (instead of being ashamed). I thought I could handle the situation, and I tried my best not to let it impact my education, but I was wrong.

If this pass/fail stipulation is dropped, I want to apply for the data analytic certificate as I am interested in pursuing financial analytics as a career. Furthermore, I am working on not being ashamed of the medication I take, and I will work to follow the advice of the academic advisors to better communicate with professors from now on.

Please understand that my failed exam does not reflect that I am a terrible student. I think I'm a good student who had one bad exam. I don't believe it's warranted to judge a challenging course on a final exam when the building blocks are done throughout the semester.

Thank you for considering this appeal.

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: If this stipulation is removed, I plan to work towards getting my data analytics certificate from the computer science department. I have already achieved one of the requirements, taking COMM162; if the stipulation is removed, I want to enroll in CISC251 in the fall and take CISC181 in the winter, satisfying two requirements in the data analytics certificate conditions. Moreover, I believe that this is achievable because of my work ethic; since the medication I take wears off after 6 pm, I work hard to ensure that I accomplish all the required tasks. I will continue to schedule and organize my days meticulously to ensure that I make the most of every day. I will also look to adopt new strategies for success to ensure that my day is productive. Lastly, I will work to follow the advice of the academic advisors to better communicate with professors from now on to ensure that this is the only incident that occurs in my time at Queen's University.
