Dear Dr. Jill Atkinson, Associate Dean (Academic) Arts and Science
I am writing to ask for consideration for Aegrotat Standing for Math 112, Chem 112, Biol 103 and Math 121. As indicated in my request to drop a course late, on April 13, 2022, I have been living through a new and significant mental health diagnosis. I have decided to not continue to try to write exams and finish my assignments as it became clear that any additional stress on me was resulting in confusion, physical distress and dissociation. If I do not qualify for Aegrotat Standing for any course, would you kindly consider this as an appeal to late drop the course.
I entered Queens University in the fall with a LOA for a medical condition I have been struggling with for years. In mid-February of 2022, I began having new difficulties which were identified by and eventually diagnosed by the professional I was seeing regularly. A mental health crisis was assessed by Dr. Jamey Adirim on March 31, 2022 and shared with you in the Appeal to drop CISC 101 on April 13, 2022. I dropped one course and requested deferral on last assignments and four exams. Despite my best intentions, I have not been able to attend to my studies since. I have had to move from a house with five roommates, to my own apartment and go through the process of assessment and receiving the official report on the diagnosis. I have been struggling with daily activities of independent living. I have experienced worsening symptoms including memory issues, emotional distress associated with the stages of acceptance, increased anxiety, depression, fatigue, inability to concentrate, irritability, inability to sleep and confusion. I experience crippling headaches, light sensitivity and nausea. I would not at this time be able to attend an examination, or write it.
After discussion with Dr. Jamey Adirim, and with help, I have submitted an Academic Consideration Request on May 9, 2022 indicating that I would not be able to attend my deferred exam schedule. I am waiting on Dr. Jamey Adirim??s medical note to accompany it and this letter. I have an appointment with Caroline Teske to review my action plan on May 11, 2022 and to plan to update my accommodations. I have cancelled my plans to attend summer school and will focus instead on building my health. I have more work to do identifying the skills, supports and strategies I will need to have in place by the fall in order to return successfully to the classroom. I am aware of many of the supports available through the student support office and the Accommodation??s office and their role in supporting my success. I will discuss my plan for the fall with Dr. Adirim and my longtime family physician. If I am not confident of my ability to manage a full academic schedule, I will consider a part time load. I am aware that there is a process open to me, if I need to request an absence for a semester for medical reasons.
I am a fighter and a winner. I have a long history of overcoming obstacles and achieving academically. I have academic dreams to achieve at Queens University. I appreciate your time and effort in considering my request for Aegrotat Standing or Late Drop the course if I do not qualify.
