Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: My name is Bilaal and I am a student at Queen's University in the Computing program. I am requesting to drop all of my courses from the winter term of 2022. I have struggled with mental health throughout my university experience thus far. Last year I was not able to get in touch with SWS for proper aid for the issues pertaining to my mental health. As my mental health grew worse at the start of the 2021 fall term I began neglecting my courses and often wouldn't even get out of bed. My mother eventually flew to Kingston from Pakistan to be with me and assist me in getting the help I needed. After visiting the SWS in person I was able to get in touch with a therapist who has since helped me better understand the issues in my mental health and how to prevent and control my episodes of anxiety/depression. Upon reaching this point I applied for academic consideration in order to salvage my grades to the best of my ability, after confusion with my documentation I also emailed my professors ahead of my academic consideration's approval because I was running out of time in the semester. Eventually, my academic consideration was approved and 3 out of 4 of my professors had written back to me. My PSYC 100 professor as well as my ECON 112 professor, suggested I appeal to drop the course as it was likely too late in the semester to get the passing grade/prerequisite grade I needed. My CISC 124 professors never responded to the email I sent. My PHIL 111 professor gave me an opportunity to fix my grade however I would have to complete all the assignments in the course in a very short period of time to do so. I decided to attempt to contact academic advising to figure out an academic plan on what I should do, however, they were booked out due to the approaching exam season. I then sent an email to the head of computing in hopes of better understanding my situation and how to salvage it, to which I have not received a response. I was unsure of what to do and wasn't sure how to correct my grades and come up with an academic plan. Due to so much uncertainty as well as feelings of failure I once again had a depressive episode. After speaking with my SWS therapist, family and friends I am in a much better state of mind and ready to pursue my academic career. However, to do so I would need to drop all of these courses because if I do not I will fail them and have my GPA dropped to a point where I will likely be asked to withdraw. I have found a proper support system for myself and believe I can academically succeed and am prepared to do so now.
