Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,

I am appealing my final grade in the course of CHEM 223, instructed by Professor Anne Petitjean. During the final exam period I suffered severe illness. Despite the several negative covid tests, my sickness persisted from the end of Week 12 into the first week of exams (April 7-18th). This was already a stressful time for me as a student but the illness along with the studying and completion of final assignments, really got the better of me. During that period of time my prolonged sickness prevented me from sleeping and eating properly which lead to my anxiety taking over. I found myself getting more and more overwhelmed and I was no longer performing to the best of my ability. I tried to get a handle on things for my upcoming exams but after seeing my final grade in the course I realized that my physical and mental health had gotten the better of me. This is extremely devastating as I try to manage my anxiety to avoid build up in this manner. Following the exam, I went home to Ottawa immediately to seek help from my parents as I was no longer in a healthy mental state. After spending a few days there, getting the necessary help; I returned to Kingston to complete my other exams. The rest of said exams went a lot better, as my overall health improved. It is evident that my illness greatly impacted my ability to perform on the CHEM 223 exam, especially since my average going into the exam was a 77% whereas leaving it was only 57%. This is a drastic difference. I have never done so poorly on any assignment or final exam in this course or any of my other courses. This grade is very clearly inconsistent with my past academic performance.

As for next time I am feeling ill during exams, I will seek help sooner and explore my options for potentially postponing my exam to a later date to ensure I am at my best when writing the final exam. I beg you, please consider my appeal for this course. This grade is not a reflection of the time and effort I put into the course. I studied early on, kept up to date in the lectures, participated in tutorials and even sought out a tutor. This grade is not only a hindrance to my academic average but it is also preventing me from achieving my educational goals such as being accepted to the PharmD program at the University of Toronto, currently awaiting my transcript. Please, this means the world to me.
