Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean of Studies,

I am appealing to drop CHEM 211, 212, and 213 (Fall 2021) due to extenuating circumstances.

This appeal was strongly recommended by counsellors at Student Wellness Services, Barb Lotan and Solita Hoogendam. My extenuating circumstance is a traumatic event that has caused me ongoing psychological issues. The event occurred on November 27th, 2021. This required a trip to the Emergency Room on December 1st, 2021. I immediately contacted my counsellor at SWS, Solita, to help me with my circumstances and plan my next steps.

I was unable to focus on school because of the psychological distress this event caused, which directly impacted my academic performance. I had completed my coursework for the Fall 2021 semester up to November 27th, 2021, and I was on track to finish the semester strong. The event happened the last week of the semester and the distress prevented me from being able to study for and write my finals for CHEM 211, 212 and 213.

I am still affected by this event, and because of this I did not enroll in courses for the Winter 2022 semester. The lasting impact this event has had on me prevented me from writing this letter earlier as well. I used the semester break to attend regular counselling and meet with psychologists and psychiatrists. This has helped me tremendously and I believe I am ready to return to my studies in the Fall. I plan to retake CHEM 211, 212, and 213 in the Fall 2022 semester and continue to attend regular counselling.
