Petition Letter: Associate Dean (Studies),
My name is Chandra Erickson, and I am appealing to aegrotat SOCY 520 (Fall 2014-Winter 2015).
During this semester (Winter 2015), I had dealt with some extenuating circumstances that have impacted my ability to complete the remaining amount of this course. The extenuating circumstance, to be more specific, was that I was diagnosed with anxiety and depression. My anxiety and depression worsened over the term, and began to affect my ability to concentrate, focus, write and memorize. This past semester my doctor prescribed me medication, which initially worsened my state insofar that these changes and adjustments made me very ill, unable to get out of bed, attend classes, and, therefore, do well in my courses. Furthermore, in the previous academic year (2013-14) I became physically ill and visited the Kingston General Hospital emergency room approximately 5-7 times in addition to a series of appointments and medical tests including an ultrasound, CAT scan, Meckels Diverticulum scan and sigmoidoscopy in attempt to reach a diagnosis (which were all inconclusive). During this time, I was able to manage and balance my academics. Also, I have been in regular contact with my professors throughout both processes.
I have already begun a new plan that will help me in achieving academic success in the future. Since the semester has come to an end and I intend to pursue my Masters of Sociology at the University of Toronto, I have been attending regular sessions with a psychotherapist. I have been taking alternative steps to aid in my mental, physical and emotional recovery. During my counseling sessions, I have been practicing mind over mood and mindfulness that are designed to aid in the control of thoughts and acceptance of emotions. Additionally, I have also started a journal and morning pages to help with my depression and anxiety. I have now just finished my first nine sessions, and I am already seeing improvements in my memory, concentration, mood and overall health. Also, I am in frequent contact (by phone or in person) with my doctor to monitor and assess the gradual progression I have recently seen with my medication. I am looking to continue with these sessions and visits to better equip myself for the upcoming academic year.
If the appeal to aegrotat SOCY 520 is granted, I will be able to satisfy my program requirements to graduate in June 2015.
Thank you for your consideration,
Chandra Erickson
