Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Deans,

My name is Yichi Zhang, and I am writing to appeal to CR Math211.

I had a challenging time during winter term exam period. I received a phone call from my mother about four days before my Math211 final exam. She told me that my father had a severe car accident in the morning. A truck rear-ended my father's car because the truck driver had been driving all night without any breaks or sleep. In the phone call, my mother didn't explain too many details to me, and she just said she wanted me to take care of myself. After my mother hung up the phone, I tried to convince myself and comfort myself for days. Needleless to say, I was really distracted at that time. I couldn't get enough sleep during the exam periods, because I was so worried about my father, and I kept asking my mother how my father's situation was. At that time, I was hoping to make every day goes faster, I can't wait to meet him.

Fortunately, after about a week in a coma, my mother told me that my father was awake. Right now, he is recovering at home.

I have taken three courses this term CISC499, CISC271, and Math211(Winter). I received an A- for CISC499 and a C for CISC271. Even though I got C for CISC271, this is entirely my responsibility; I didn't get used to the format of the tests and the assignments. Moreover, this car accident occurred after these two classes had finished already.

This academic year for me was difficult. My mental illness during the end of the fall term influenced my Math211 mid-year exam. But I thought I still have a chance to improve my grade in the winter term. Through one winter break of therapy, my mental illness was fully recovered; and everything was on the right track in the winter term. However, this accident happened unexpectedly. I was at a loss, and it was beyond my control. I think I have tried my best to adjust my attitude.

From now on, I am about to graduate; I really love and enjoy studying at Queen's University. It will be the best memory that I have had in my life; I have met many friends and admirable professors. I will continue to work in the future. Thank you for allowing me to explain my circumstance.
