Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Academic Appeals Committee,

I am appealing to late drop PHYS 316, PHYS 344, BIOL 343 (Fall, 2021) and PHYS 317, PHYS 345, and PHYS 372 (Winter, 2022). This would enable me to register for and take these courses once I am fully recovered and able to take on an academic course load.


Extenuating circumstances beyond my control affected my ability to complete these courses. I had acute physical health issues that severely affected my mental health. Throughout the year, I communicated with my professors and the Accessibility office to continue working on my courses, however I was unable to finish my courses. I had to take time away from class many times due to my extenuating circumstances. I was hoping to complete my courses by requesting an Incomplete grade, however my illness continued for an extended period of time. It took quite some time to determine the issues that were affecting me, and I was able to have my surgery mid-May. By that point I had already taken too much time away from my courses. As I am now in the recovery period, I have reflected and talked to my advisors. My best option is to drop these courses and complete them over the next year to graduate. I will be registering in September if I feel that I have the physical and mental capacity to do so. To summarize, I did not late drop these courses until now because I did not have the capacity to do so and was hoping to be able to complete them over the following semester.


After the drop deadline during the fall semester, I had an acute physical injury that directly impacted my day-to-day living and affected my ability to complete coursework. I saw a slight period of improvement, however I was still at below-capacity and this continued into the next semester. My professors explored the Incomplete grading option with me, however I was unable to keep up with my previous and current coursework. With worsening physical health, I was completely unable to attend class. I went between many different appointments with a team of medical professionals and was unable to manage my pain. The present state of my circumstances is improved.


My future plan includes re-assessing my condition in September and retaking the courses. Since I have had surgery to drastically improve my condition, my recovery plan is now in place and I am already doing better. Please let me know if any additional documentation is required (I am able to provide surgery documentation upon request). I have included documentation from my counsellor, Pamela Hall, MC, Registered Psychotherapist.
