Dear Dr. Stephenson,

My name is Andrew Raymond Vella. My student number is 20241009. I have received notification that I have been required to withdraw for one year from the Faculty of Arts and Science effective May 25, 2022.

I am writing you to request an appeal of this decision. I realize that this should have been submitted by June 15, 2022. I have received permission to appeal this decision past the deadline (attached).

The past academic year was a difficult one for me. Covid had an extremely detrimental effect on my school year. I was living in residence. As you are aware, it was recommended that students living in residence return home and switch to online learning for the period mid-December 2021 until the beginning of March 2022. Switching to online learning was very difficult for me. Prior to switching to online learning, my marks were significantly better than when we were online. Two weeks after returning to in-person learning, and living in residence, I contracted covid myself. Again, this had a significant, detrimental impact on my schooling.

When I was in grade school, and in high school, I had an Individual Education Plan (IEP) to assist with my learning disability. I wanted to do my post-secondary schooling without using my IEP. I now realize that this was a mistake.

I do not have documentation that I tested positive for covid as I used a rapid test as that was the only type of test available at the time. I did notify Queens when I tested positive. I have also included a copy of my IEP.

I have requested a letter from my teaching assistant supporting my appeal, not to be required to withdraw for one year. I am not sure if this email is monitored during the summer months. I will provide this letter upon receipt.

Included is my final high school report card. You will see that I am capable of markedly better grades than the disappointing grades that I earned this past year.

I have secured housing in Kingston that will permit me to remain in a university environment should Covid require us to revert to online learning once again. I will also investigate the process to have my IEP in place at Queens.

I am confident that I will be able to be successful in the Faculty of Arts and Science and hope to pursue a degree in Physics. I have attached a proposed academic plan that would permit me to continue with this goal.

Thank you very much for considering my request to continue with my studies in September 2022. I understand that I will be on academic probation and will work hard to ensure you come to realize that you made the correct decision in allowing me to continue.

Respectfully,

Andrew Vella
