Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To the Associate Deans, I am appealing to the faculty's decision that I must withdraw for the 2022-2023 academic year as well as to have the following courses: BIOL103, CHEM112 as well as MATH 121 appealed from my transcript. Thank you for allowing me the chance to explain my circumstances.

Starting out my first year of studies remotely at Queens in 2020 was a challenge for me in many ways. So much so that I ended up having to appeal my year due to extenuating circumstances. This academic year I was excited and motivated to be able to start fresh with my studies in class at Queens. As the year progressed, I excelled in my electives but struggled with my core classes. This was due to multiple reasons, one being it was my first time ever away from home and living on my own. I now know the choices I made balancing my studies and university life could have been managed in a much more responsible way. I take full responsibility for the outcome of this year.

In addition to this, given I have found myself in this position, I have concluded over the past months that I never gave thought to pursuing other courses. Thus, forcing myself to enjoy something more than I realistically did. Despite this, I was able to pass all my electives including PSYCH 100. I was much more involved in courses that suited my learning style as well as my interests. I struggled immensely in my three core classes worth much of my GPA but refused to admit it to myself once I caught wind of my midterm grades as I was embarrassed. The thought of having to possibly appeal a second time around, being years behind my graduating class as well as my academic plan caused me to be neglectful to my problems. Being a perfectionist alongside previously established psycho-stressors had been a present struggle throughout my studies, none of which I can honestly say were the primary reason of my academic outcome. As much as I could insinuate that these had been the reason for my poor grades, I cannot as I have learned and improved on how to cope with these and will continue to do so moving forward as I am proud of the progress I have made with these mental setbacks. This said, I did not study effectively enough for these three exams hence my failure to pass the finals. I would like to accept this as a sign to make changes and move forward with my studies in a new light if granted the opportunity.

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: My plan going forward is to take an array of courses much like my electives this past year that worked well for me. In doing so I will immediately be able to determine what classes will peak my interests and would be worth pursuing. I also have plans to meet with career services to be given proper guidance on a career path that will be better suited for my capabilities and interests. Law has always been an interest of mine however given my limited exposure to anything other than science-based courses throughout grade school gipped me of the confidence to pursue other fields of study. If the faculty??s decision to have me withdraw for the year were to be waved, I would be taking full advantage of choosing the proper courses moving forward in my studies.

I would understand if this request were difficult to accept, however the environment I had immersed myself in the past academic year made it clear I desperately want to continue my studies at Queens and pick the right program for me. I will make no excuse for having submitted this appeal past the guaranteed deadline of June 14th or for the reasoning behind my appeals, these were acts of humiliation on my end as well as not taking responsibility for my actions.

I would appreciate any leeway you would see fit for my circumstances. Thank you for your time and consideration to my appeal.
Please contact me should more information be needed.
