Petition Letter: The following information is confidential and specifically relates to my daughter Kristina Staley (10023217). I am submitting this information on her behalf, as she is unable to do so at this time and we want to ensure the application has enough time to allow for review in consideration of her pending Spring 2015 graduation.
Kristina Staley is a fourth year student enrolled in the faculty of Arts and Science who has applied to graduate in the 2015 Spring convocation with a Hon.BA (Soc). She is respectfully requesting Aegrotat standing in two of her courses this semester - Socy 475 and Comm 200/600 - due to an extenuating medical circumstance that is beyond her control.
Kristina was initially diagnosed two years ago with a serious medical disorder affecting one of her internal organs and since the start of her third year she has been suffering from this chronic condition. In fact when initially diagnosed her physician team recommended that she consider delaying her academics as the medical treatment was going to be long and difficult, but school has always been important to her and she was dedicated to complete her program. Therefore she refused to quit or delay her studies and instead elected to deal with her medical issues and setbacks to the best of her ability while pursuing her goal to graduate in the spring of 2015 with her class.
Specifically this medical condition can be very painful and result in severe periods of physical discomfort and fatigue, which substantially restricts her ability to write, study and sustain academic concentration. Additionally her advanced medications necessary to treat this condition present significant side effects and reduce her overall immune system thereby making her very susceptible to secondary acute medical complications. In addition to the physical limitations and emotional stress this condition has placed upon her it also has disrupted her ability to attend classes and conduct academic studies due to the fact she often had to attend a substantial number of doctor appointments, hospital visits, weekly lab tests, etc. which are not always local and often based in Toronto. Despite these challenges imposed by her poor health that are beyond her control, Krista has always put forth her best effort not to let this condition rule her life and as such she has always strived to do her academic best, achieve the highest standing possible under these unfortunate circumstances (current GPA B).
However the preparation for upcoming exams, and writing of final papers during this last semester before graduation put excessive stress on her medical condition. Unfortunately her health declined over the past several weeks and despite her best effort to keep strong things rapidly declined to the point where due to an unexpected acute medical event beyond her control that occurred abruptly on April 5th, 2015 Krista had to immediately return to Toronto to seek immediate medical treatment. During the assessment her physician was required to send her to Hospital where she received additional medical care. At this point Krista has been instructed by her medical doctor to follow a strict treatment plan in order to recuperate. She is also scheduled for a series of tests to determine the state of her chronic underlying condition. As such this current medical crisis directly conflicts with her ability to complete her final two academic tasks - Socy475 (written essay) and Comm200/600 (April 17th exam). In each of these subjects more than 60 of the course has been completed and her grades to date in each indicates a good academic standing. Additionally we discussed her situation with each professor and both have been very understanding and have indicated their support (via email) for calculating her final grade using Aegrotat standing.
Krista and I want to thank you in advance for your consideration of this formal request for Aegrotat standing ¿¿ she has done her best to persevere and overcome medical challenges for the past two years in order to reach her goal to graduate in the Spring 2015 convocation with her class.
