Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: I am appealing to waive the 21 day deadline in order to appeal my requirement to withdraw for one year. Upon attempting to select Autumn courses, I was met with a block, informing me that I was required to withdraw. I called an academic advisor, and was told that I would have missed an email, sent in May, detailing this. Around the time of the email being sent, I was under the impression, as instructed by a PASS advisor, that I was in no danger of this happening and so was not at all on the lookout for any emails like this. I also was the only support for my girlfriend who was going through a major depressive episode (evidence in the form of a doctors note can be included if necessary to speak to the severity of the situation), and so I hyper focused my academic mind to my summer courses so as to not let my grades slip, and therefore was not being diligent with my inbox.
The reason my grades were as they were last year is becasue I myself went through a major depressive episode- it started near the beginning of first year and my family live in the UK so I had very limited support. But, I pulled myself out of it and came up with a plan. This plan started with talking to an academic advisor to see what could be done and how to move forward. I specifially checked to ensure whether all attempted units/courses would count towards the 24 unit threshold to be able to come back undeclared, and was assured that only passed/completed units/courses would go towards it. (Evidence of this assurance is included in supporting documentation). On this basis, I then moved forward with renting a house and booked flights for travel to and from home up till christmas. I then arranged to complete summer courses (which have now put me over the threshold) and to spend most of my summer in Kingston so I could start my turnaround largely distraction free as few students would remain here over summer. I have created good momentum for myself and am making good progress, as shown by the summer courses I am passing where I wasn't passing before. Withdrawal for a year would be a huge hardship for me, and it would be detrimental to the progress and momentum I have started to build.
