Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean (Academic),

I am appealing to drop ENGL 281 (Fall, 2020).

I am a former student and last attended Queen??s in the spring of 2010. On July 6th, 2020, I submitted a ??Return to Studies? form to the Faculty of Arts & Science to see if it would be possible for me to be readmitted without applying as an external applicant. At that time, I was working remotely due to Covid-19 and understood that most learning had also moved to a remote format. I had hoped that the increased flexibility would afford me the time to resume my studies, while continuing to work full-time. It was a shifting process to confirm my admission as the faculty was experiencing an influx of requests. I eventually needed to call in to request an enrollment appointment time because one hadn??t been provided.

On my enrollment appointment date (August 26th, 2020), I logged into SOLUS to review the course catalogue and saw that the selection of available courses was very limited. I realized that it wasn??t feasible for me to enroll because none of available courses could fit into my work schedule. I decided not to register, logged off and didn??t pursue it further.

In January of 2021, I signed into SOLUS and saw that a Senate Sanction Block fee in the amount of 618.31 had been applied to my account. I inquired about the fee with Student Affairs and they advised it was for the course ENGL-281, and directed me to contact Solus if I did not enroll in the course. Solus confirmed that I had been enrolled in the course and advised me that I was likely added to it by the faculty when I submitted my ??Return to Studies? form. The Faculty of Arts & Science then advised that a staff member did not register me, so I would need to meet with an academic advisor about my appeal options. I was provided with a link for the webpage about the appeal process. After I reviewed the webpage, it seemed apparent that my situation did not fit within the parameters that were outlined for an academic appeal.

I lost sight of the matter until I received a voicemail from the Student Receivables department in March 2022. I contacted them and was referred back to the response from my original inquiry in January 2021.

I had no intention of enrolling for the semester and no knowledge of being enrolled in ENGL-281 until after the course had already ended. As such, I hadn??t participated in the class in any way and have included confirmation of this from the course professor as supporting documentation. Given this, I hope that ENGL-281 can be ??dropped? and the associated fees and grade reversed.

Thank you for your attention in this matter. Please let me know if I can provide any further information or documentation to assist.

Thank you,
