Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean of Art and Science Faculty,

My name is Xiangyi Chen. I am appealing for the extension of the Incomplete Grade for the course GPHY 370 and 227. I have completed all tasks and asked for a change of grade.

Firstly, I would like to tell you why I need this extension on these two courses after you granted me an extension in my previous appeal. After I received the decision on April 11, there is only 18 days for me. Even though I started work earlier; However, as there are 4 courses for me to complete at the same time, this date is quite pushing. I know this is a generous decision, therefore, I tried my best to catch up with this deadline, and almost finished in very early May.

I would like to tell you about my health condition. I was not well in late April and was sent to the hospital on May 16th. The situation is very urgent and I had to stop everything to rest. I was groggy in bed due to this sudden illness and had to be cared for by others in the first few weeks. This is also why I submit my appeal for 230 with rash writing and supporting documents on my appeal letter.

This sudden experience strikes me a lot, as I was supposed to finish all remaining by the deadline and graduate in Spring. During my hospitalization, my mom was suddenly ill. She was then diagnosed with cancer, level of V. I didn??t know how to describe my feelings in English. I was too desperate to react to anything. It was a struggling time both physical and psychological. I received treatments for nearly 2 months.

Before I wrote this email, I hesitate a lot. I did not know how I could describe my situation in the appeal letter. The things that happened to me in the past two years are too unbelievable. If not experiencing these, I will also not trust my story. The family changed and serious illnesses happened one by one. The severity was beyond what I reported to the faculty, and some symptoms regenerated and worsened within this period. I never thought this is a long fight and thus my academics had to stop for a time. Every time I was too pressured to write the appeal and fear to be rejected.

This experience is too tough for me. Many times, I almost collapsed. My mother??s illness made me too upset. I cried for many days until she was in the operation, I was suddenly brave. I know I have to take care of her then, therefore, no matter what I have to finish this vicious life.

Your decision means a lot to me. I know the faculty and instructor offer many bits of help and chances on my study. That is the reason why I did not give up but pushed myself. I hope to become normal and be creditable for my appointments. Due to the professor's encouragement and my mother's illness, I insisted on finishing the last part. I did not know whether you could offer your generous help one more time, but I want to make one last stand for myself. It is very important for me and my family. I will really appreciate it if you could help me.
