Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science Dr. Jenn Stephenson,
I am appealing to drop the following courses from Winter 2022: FREN 304, FREN 342, and FREN 351. FREN 498 is not included in this appeal because I received a passing grade.
The extenuating circumstances behind my appeal started on March 7th, 2022, after the deadline to drop winter courses, and continued into the winter exam season. The morning of March 7th I fell and hit my head, but I felt fine and continued all my readings and assignments. However, from March 8th to March 11th my mental and physical exhaustion were severe enough that I could not attend my classes. On March 11th I was worried enough to visit the KGH emergency room. Before being discharged they gave me the number for Hotel Dieu, and on April 6, 2022, I had an appointment with Dr. Richer.
At first, I though I was going through burnout again. Since it was past the drop deadline, and I was projected to graduate, I spent the rest of March trying to improve my situation. I returned to my classes so that I could participate, work on, and present my group projects. During week 11, I emailed all my professors to create a plan for me to catch up, and complete all my late, missed, and on-going individual assignments. The professors who did reply to my emails did so in an understanding manner. Since most of the communication had been completed before week 12, all parties responded with optimism, including myself.
It was not until an appointment with Student Wellness Services, March 22nd, that I realized that I may have gotten a second concussion when I hit my head. During that appointment, I had a déjà vu moment when talking about the prolonged fatigue, and inability to focus when reading and working on the computer. In May of 2019, I was in a car accident in which I received a concussion. There is an increased risk of receiving another concussion after the first.
I am aware that I have previously submitted an academic appeal to late drop courses under the extenuating circumstances of burnout. That is one of the reasons why I was so hesitant to submit an appeal earlier, as this case may be ruled out as ongoing. It was until recent conversation with my parents that reminded me about the seriousness of head trauma and to not let this be a barrier to completing my education. This motivated me to write this appeal.
As you can see it took me three months to build up the courage to submit my appeal. During this time, I have devoted myself to my summer job as a STEM camp counsellor at Little Robot Friends in Toronto. I have attended all meetings and shifts. I believe that this shows that I can be dedicated, persevere, and foreshadows my ability to be able to recommit to my academic career. I have also taken this time to rest and reconnect with my family and close friends.
If my appeal were to be approved, it would give me the opportunity to complete my BAH.
