Petition Letter
Petition Letter: This may be one of the older appeals you receive - I was accepted into Queen's and started in the Computer Science program in the Fall of 2002. I have a late birthday and fast-tracked my high school to avoid the OAC double-cohort of 2003. The combination of uncertainty about the program I chose, the change of living away from a family I was very close with, and the challenges of leaving behind my high school girlfriend (now my wife and mother of our 4 kids) left me vulnerable, and I lacked the maturity to take advantage of the services and supports (both through my family and through Queen's) that could have helped me course-correct.
Leaving Queen's was a humbling experience - I re-started my education at St Lawrence College, and moved back to Toronto to finish my diploma at Seneca College while working part-time to support my family. From there, I attended Ryerson and completed my Bachelor of Commerce degree while working full-time (I took a full-time course load over evenings, weekends, and online classes), graduating with Distinction and a 3.65 GPA.
Professionally, I've been fortunate to have had the opportunity to work for many great organizations in leadership positions, and am currently leading the Marketing team at a high-growth software company. Over the years, I have built a network and support system that pushes me to be my best, both at home and in the office.
I'm applying for reinstatement because I know that it wasn't a mistake that I was accepted to Queen's - it was just premature. I'd appreciate the opportunity to explore what it could look like to complete my degree, and prove to myself and the institution that I have the qualities and characteristics that Queen's looks for in its students.
I've intentionally kept this brief, as I'm not sure what specific details would be helpful on an appeal that's been nearly two decades in the making, but I'd welcome the opportunity to provide any other details that would be useful in your decision-making process.
