In mid December I was informed that one of my closest family members had recently been diagnosed with cancer. After being run down by the fall semester (moving away from home, training on a varsity team and not being able to see my family) I found myself feeling especially drained. Most Christmas breaks prior were filled with time spent with family and taking some much needed downtime. Alternatively this break was filled with the news of scary surgeries and constant panic.
Shortly following the news of my loved one's condition, I had a falling out with a close friend. In the past, this friend had always been my first point of contact to talk through any issues. The loss of this particular friend coupled with the news of my family member, caused me significant distress and led me to feel helpless and isolated.
As the days approaching the start of the term came around, I found myself feeling more stressed and fatigued than at the end of my fall exam period. This exhaustion made it difficult to start the semester on a good note and made it particularly challenging picking up from where I left off during the fall semester. The start of the winter was especially challenging as I was still on the waitlist for one of my classes and I was 3.0 credits short of a full course load. As a result, I had emailed several faculties and professors asking to be enrolled into different courses.
I was finally enrolled into a class 2 weeks into the semester. This situation was exceptionally difficult as I was already fairly behind on most of the content for a course that was valued as one of the most challenging courses of my degree, BCHM 218.
As I tried to catch up in my courses, I had a tough time concentrating and found myself overcome with stress and anxiety. This situation progressed so much that I found myself having several panic attacks a day. Due to my mental state, I had no option but to request an academic considerations and extensions from my professors as my panic attacks would take up all of my focus and energy. Failing to concentrate and falling behind in my courses set off a spiralling event in which I found myself barely eating and sleeping. With the sudden loss in appetite, I felt as though I had no energy. This eventually forced me to postpone all of my winter training which pushed me further into isolation.
My coach had noticed that I had been struggling and put me in contact with a counsellor (Becky Haist - Queen's Mental Health Coach) where I seeked care in mid March. Things slowly got better when classes came back into person and I was able to reconnect with friends back in Kingston. However, it was too late in the term to salvage my grades.
With all of this consideration, I have made the decision to apply for an academic credit standing appeal for BCHM 218 (taken during Winter 2022).
