Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Hi, I am appealing the deadline to add/drop courses for 2022 fall term. Specifically, I am hoping to move from GLPH 385-Blended, to GLPH 385-Online for the remainder of the term, keeping up with the same content under the same professor (who I have gained permission to move from - Dr. Carver).

After giving much thought and having multiple conversations, this is the best course of action for me as otherwise I would drop the course. There have been personal issues within the blended section that have become extremely detrimental to my mental health. I am a student registered with QSAS verified by the mental health and learning/neurodivergency forms for reference. I have not been mentally well, hence why I also did only enrol in four courses rather than my usual five this term. I took GLPH385 as an elective I found exciting and interesting, however the peers I have been placed with tampered my enjoyment thus far. We are placed into groups for the semester, and to spare details regarding other students, I will simply say I have never been spoken to in the manner I have been lately. I do have all conversations downloaded if details regarding this are necessary. My group has been communicating with me unprofessionally, being condescending, and frankly rude. I have learned to work with many different types of people, and I have encountered many difficult people. I have become accustomed to accommodate, turn the other cheek, and focus on the big picture. Having that said, the treatment by my group so far is like no other and I refuse to tolerate this type of behaviour in my upper years of university. Throughout my years of study, I have learned that you cannot afford to give everything 100% of your energy, I do not have the mental capacity for that now. Being in fourth year, I choose for my efforts and energy to go towards my courses, grad applications, my extra-curriculars, etc. Not that this class is unimportant, however it is meant to be a class I enjoy, and should not be additional stress.

I have had several conversations, asking to talk face-face, even blatantly asking for mutual respect, nothing has been budged. I went to lengths of speaking to my therapist for a few weeks about the situation as well, when in reality it should not be the most prominent issue in my life. It is far more than a hiccup. I did not know any of these individuals prior to being in a group with them, but somehow a vendetta was created against me. Queen's sets on making sure students are thriving in these classrooms, so I am appealing to allow me to thrive and succeed in this course.

I want to remain in this class and finish what I began, but in a way that does not trigger depressive episodes and panic attacks. I hope my intent is understood, I simply would just like to move on from this.

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: As I am incredibly interested in the contents of this course, I know I will achieve academic success once my learning environment is shifted, and my peers are rearranged. I would rather be placed in a new group online or even complete the assignments individually if that is not possible in the online section.
