Petition Letter: Dear the Associate Dean (Academic),
My reasoning for submitting an appeal regards two courses which I was enrolled in fortuitously in the summer months. At the time I was very sick dealing with infectious mononucleosis and other personal issues while working with multiple health care professionals. I suffered from the disease from March to July of 2022. My illness caused a pause on all normal activity in my life for several months, and unfortunately my academics suffered as well due to these two courses. Accidentally enrolling in summer courses for which I did no work for and did not attend due to my lack of knowledge of being enrolled resulted in me most likely failing the courses. The courses are WRIT125 (Fundamentals of Academic Essay Writing) and IDIS199 (The Science of Mental Health, Well-Being, & Resiliency). These are two courses that I was interested in taking and was browsing but had no intention of taking them after becoming very ill while infected with infectious mononucleosis. I know my grades from these courses will negatively impact my transcript and overall GPA, which is why I am appealing to have these courses and marks dropped from my transcript. I fear that I will suffer severe academic consequences due to this issue and will potentially be unable to fulfil my academic plan for success. I prioritize my readings, assignments, quizzes, and all other schoolwork above most other aspects in my life however, becoming very ill made it difficult to continue this way and has left me with the consequence to which I am attempting to resolve through my appeal.
At the beginning of the year, I worked with many individuals at the Art-Sci faculty office progressing towards a revised academic plan for my years at Queen??s University and was directed here in the next step of my plan. Currently I am majoring in Philosophy but have an academic plan in place to work towards a major in psychology as I am very passionate about it and I am working towards a career in the psychology field. I am physically recovered now from infectious mononucleosis after many months of working with health care professionals and I am prepared to work with determination to strive for success in all my courses and my future here at Queen??s. I have a reduced course load currently this semester to ensure I am fully recovered and there are no more setbacks in my plan for success. I want to do this appeal to succeed further in my Queen??s education that I am so passionate about. Prioritizing course work is essential in my plan for success as a full-time student, and I have been doing so since my recovery. I have learned from my mistake and take it into account every day as I complete my work. I attend regular meetings with a healthcare professional continuously to ensure I stay on track health-wise. My current plans of working towards and maintaining academic success while maintaining a healthy lifestyle supports my academic goals in perusing an undergraduate degree here at Queen??s and further schooling following my undergrad. My own determination combined with the help of an academic advisor has led me to believe I am on the right track for being successful academically. These two courses are a large set-back in my plan for academic success, so I am submitting this appeal to have them dropped from my transcript in order to stay on the path to success. If any follow up information is required such as documentation, please feel free to contact me at 20saw8@queensu.ca as I would be happy to provide any further information to move forward with this process.
Thank you for your consideration,
Sierra Wilson, 20274027
