To the Associate Dean (Academic):



My name is Karamjeet Kaur Pabla and I am asking to drop Fall 2022 - Bchm 102. In the beginning of the fall term (September 09th 2022), I had to have emergency appendicitis surgery which meant that I went back home in a rush without any access to my books, notes and materials.



I had gone home on September 08th because I felt uneasy and like something was wrong so my mother came down from Scarborough and picked me up. The next day, I started getting really intense pain which made it hard to even walk and my mom had to rush me to the hospital where we had to stay for a total of twenty-six hours. When I first got to the hospital, we had to wait 4 hours just for them to even look at me. Then, they gave me medication to numb the pain, and I wasn??t allowed to eat until after the surgery which occurred at around 11pm on September 09th. I was in the hospital until September 10th, where I was discharged at 8:30 am after taking some tests just to make sure that everything went smoothly with the surgery and to see if there were no complications. I was finally sent home where I was given the instructions to rest until I have healed fully. The recovery process took around 3 weeks, and during this time I had no access to my books, materials or notes. We also live two and a half hours away from Queen??s and my mom was working the majority of the time making it hard to go back and pick up the materials I did not have. I was also not allowed in a car for a couple of weeks so I was not able to go with her or come back to Queen??s while I was recovering. Therefore, I was unable to do any of the work from my classes.



In the meantime, I had requested for academic consideration, and I was only given 5 days of consideration from the 09th of September where my situation was deemed severe, to the 15th of September in which my condition was considered as moderate from the 10th to the 15th of September. This clearly was not enough time since I was recovering for 3 weeks after the date of my surgery, all while my condition was quite literally severe during the first week especially, so I applied for more time. However, there were some problems with documentation and miscommunication which took even longer to receive consideration. Since I did not have a clear statement that shows I received more time from the academic consideration office, the professors for my classes would not let me catch up on the work that I had missed, which kept me even more behind in the class. In the end, I ended up receiving more time around October 27th to the 2nd of November. This was almost a whole month and a half after the emergency. However, by then I had already missed an incredible amount of work plus content, meaning no matter what, I was behind. I even had to drop 3 classes earlier in the term because the professors said I had already missed so many graded assignments that I would not be able to catch up and my marks would just be impacted in a negative way.



At first, I thought that I would be able to catch up with these 2 classes that I kept since I had dropped the other 3, however I realized that I had already missed so much content and assignments that I have gone long past the point of catching up. I don't fully understand the content and this course would just drag me down since I didn't really get to take in any of the material. I plan on retaking the course at some point and doing better than I could have done now due to the extenuating circumstance.
