Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dec. 6th, 2022

To The Associate Dean (Academic),

I am requesting an academic appeal to receive a credit standing in the following courses: PHGY 210, PHGY 170, BIOL 103, MATH 121B (2016 Winter), and PHAR 100. I am also requesting to have MATH 121B (2017 Winter) dropped from my transcript. I am submitting an appeal due to extenuating circumstances that are related to my disability. During my two years at Queen's University, I struggled with an undiagnosed illness and disability. This untreated illness had a severe impact on my ability to conduct daily activities and participate in the first two years of my undergraduate education. Once I realized that my disability had a severe impact on my life, I sought psychiatric care in January 2016. After seeking medical treatment, I was diagnosed and treated by my doctor. However, this was simply the beginning of the barriers I have had to endure. I was forced to adapt and adjust to a life with a disability. This struggle included finding the correct medications, trying out different dosages and coping with the subsequent side effects. I believe these struggles had a direct impact on my poor academic performance during my time at Queen's University. I transferred to York University in 2017, where I was eventually able to adapt to the changes in my life associated with my illness and graduate with a BSc. in Psychology.

I understand that my request for these appeals is overdue, but I never predicted the impact these poor grades would have on my future. I am currently applying to law school and my overall undergraduate GPA is negatively impacted by these grades. I have a dream of becoming a lawyer and increasing access to justice for the underrepresented individuals of society. I would truly appreciate if my struggles with my then undiagnosed disability did not have a lasting influence on my future.
