Petition Letter

Petition Letter: As specified in my previous appeal for the Summer 2022 term, I am appealing due to circumstances surrounding my pregnancy and abortion.

I am asking to waive the one one term deadline to request aegrotat standing in this course (CHEM 221), as the exam was differed due to COVID-19, and by the date of the differed exam I was in the middle of the most tumultuous decision of my life. I had just discovered that I was pregnant, and had to come to terms with the fact that, for the sake of my child's quality of life, an abortion was the best decision. I then had to prepare myself to have this abortion despite wanting nothing more than to hold my daughter and carry on with my pregnancy.

Due to these circumstances, I was unable to perform well, or anywhere close to 'well' on the final exam. In fact, I'm fairly certain that I just didn't show up for the deferred exam.

I believe I was doing relatively well in the course up until that point, so I am now hoping that Aegrotat standing can be provided. The fail - causing factor was the final exam, which I was genuinely incapable of completing at the time due to the emotional and mental ramifications of my pregnancy and abortion.

The struggles associated with this horrible, awful, terrible, monster of an event continued through the summer and into this term (Fall 2022). They also lead to a major dependancy on alcohol and marijuana throughout June until quite recently when I quit. This caused me to be unable to (or maybe unwilling) to make this request at an earlier date, as I was uncomfortable with the idea of confronting my addiction, and especially, with confronting the trauma causing it. This is why there is no proof of mental health treatment for the issues I was dealing with -- I was unable to ask for help because I was in denial of the issues even existing.

For these reasons, I believe that the one-term deadline to request Aegrotat Standing should be waives, and that the Aegrotat Standing itself should be granted, pending evaluation of my performance in the course before the final exam.

Amendment to Appeal 9835

New Information: I have the SWS appeal form from a member of the triage team, which also applies to CHEM 221 in the Winter term of last year, as I discussed in my original appeal. I never received confirmation that this appeal was received, but my prior documentation regarded finding out some horrible life-altering news right before my deferred exam, leading to me missing it.
This SWS form notes that my situation was severely affecting my ability to make it to exams and remember important dates and such.
