Petition Letter: Hello,
My name is Alyson Hegan, and I am a third-year student at Queens University. Just under a week ago, I had a very unfortunate event occur with a professor, Eun-Young Lee, that has since turned into a very difficult time for me. I have accommodations registered under QSAS due to a disability that makes many certain things regarding school life difficult for me, however, I work hard to overcome these barriers. I am a student in good standing and have never missed a deadline due to how hard I do work to stay on top of things. Despite my best efforts, in busy times such as week 12 and exam periods, school and life can become overwhelming and these tasks that I usually can keep up with become impossible.
I am in HLTH 252 introduction to research methods this semester. In this class, the professor has given a one-week grace period on every assignment extending the deadline another week from the original date. This particular assignment was originally due on November 25th with a grace period extension until December 2nd. Due to the busy nature of this time of year, I, along with many other students, took advantage of this grace period and decided to submit it the following Friday. As I was about to submit it on Friday evening at 7:40 I realized I had made a horrible mistake and that this assignment was due at 4:00 pm, not 8:00 pm. My other health class has a deadline of 8:00 pm which I had confused with this one. I was so disappointed in myself as I know this was such a mindless mistake that had taken place as a result of my disability. I emailed the professor immediately at 7:46, (3 hours and 45 minutes after the extended deadline) with the completed assignment attached apologizing for this horrible mistake that I had made. I was devasted, this assignment is worth 20% and getting a zero would severely affect the mark that I worked hard to achieve. I went without a reply for 5 very stressful days to which my professor finally replied stating that she would not accept my late assignment. In between these times when she was not answering my emails, I attempted to attend her office hours, but she did not attend. After receiving her response, I reached out to my academic advisor who then confirmed with the professor that she had documentation on file that confirmed this mistake was related to my disability and that she supported any flexibility or late acceptance of this assignment. The professor then replied stating that she would still not mark the assignment as it would be unfair to other students.
In essence, this professor is refusing to acknowledge my accommodations and is giving me a zero on my 20% assignment dropping my grade in the class from an 87% to a 69%. This same professor failed to apply my accommodations along with others for our first mid-term. To fix this mistake she granted the entire class accommodations of extra time for the next midterm which I see to be extremely disrespectful to students who need these accommodations.
This situation has quite honestly been very disruptive to my mental health and in many ways made me re-question why I am even at school with my disability. It has also occurred during the busiest time, affecting my exam work in other classes. To attempt to fix this mistake, I have decided I need to drop my double major so I can raise my GPA with more elective credits, despite the amount of time and work I have already put into having a medial.
I respect the professor's final decision but at the end of the day, I also respect myself and recognize that having a disability is something that separates me from other students which I do not believe should be up to the professor to decide is legitimate or not. Therefore, I would like to see if there is any way for this 20% assignment to be marked.
