1. The Requests
I am appealing two courses that I was enrolled in during the winter term of 2019. The specific requests are as follows.
To late drop in ENIN 240 (Winter, 2019) DR
To request a credit standing in BIOL 103 (Winter, 2019) CR
2. Explanation of Extenuating Circumstances
In February 2019, I experienced an initial onset of disability-related symptoms which significantly impacted my daily living and ability to attend to academic responsibilities. My mental health challenges were initially misdiagnosed which delayed access to adequate treatment. In addition, medications I was prescribed lead to a further exacerbation of symptoms I was experiencing, which included delusional thinking. I received supports via Student Wellness Services and academic considerations, however due to the nature of my challenges, this was not sufficient. I was not able to complete assignments and I did poorly on evaluations. My symptoms persisted and escalated, leading to a diagnosis of schizophrenia and a month-long hospitalization in February 2022 for psychosis. In total, I was hospitalized three times before coming to a point of stabilization in March 2022. My schizophrenia was undiagnosed and untreated until February 2022 and I am currently in recovery.
3. Academic Plan
My academic plan is to continue with treatment and recovery before returning to studies.
