Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To Whom it may concern,

My name is Jaden Blackman, and I am writing to appeal for a late drop in BIOL 102. This past fall I suffered a major season ending injury on my knee. After this injury I was left unable to walk without the aid of crutches and a knee brace for 6 weeks while awaiting surgery. I struggled to get to and from classes and found it difficult to remain focused throughout the lectures and tutorials when also dealing with the pain and discomfort from my knee. Since I was unable to play and participate, I also struggled with the motivation for my courses. I had to go in for surgery and the earliest date I could get took me to London, Ontario to get it operated on. After having my surgery, I was unable to take care of myself and stayed with my mother in London for two weeks. During these two weeks I was unable to attend lectures and tutorials and with the heavy medication I was taking found it extremely difficult to complete assignments given to me during this time. I moved back to Kingston in late November once my mobility was slightly improved. I attempted to integrate myself back into classes, but still struggled to get myself to and from classes, since I was still on crutches and my brace prevented my knee for bending. I was having a hard time focusing and participating in my lectures and tutorials. This situation was physically and mentally draining as I was having difficulties sleeping. This semester I am in a better spot mentally due to the physiotherapy treatment I have been able to do on my knee and my mobility has improved. I am taking new courses this semester and have begun to set up an academic plan with my support network in athletics. I have organized my time and are getting some tutors for my current courses, and I have meetings with my mental health counselor as well, which has put me in a much better spot to start this semester.

Thank you for taking the time to review my appeal.

Sincerely,

Jaden Blackman
