Dear Ivy Power,
I have carefully considered your request to waive the Faculty ruling that you be Required to Withdraw for One Year and to drop ENGL 296 (F25), JAPN 200 (FW25/26), GNDS 282, LLCU 360 and LLCU 395 (W26) after the academic deadline.
After reviewing your petition, I have decided the following:
To grant your request to waive the Faculty ruling that you be Required to Withdraw for One Year and to drop JAPN 200 (FW25/26), GNDS 282, LLCU 360 and LLCU 395 (W26) after the academic deadline. Your final grades in these courses will be replaced with DR notations on your transcript once this has been processed by the Office of the University Registrar. You may now resume your studies at Queen’s University.
To deny your request to drop ENGL 296 (F25) after the academic deadline. I acknowledge the circumstances outlined in your petition letter and understand how they impacted your academic performance during the 2026 Winter term. Based on the information provided, your request does not demonstrate unexpected extenuating circumstances during the 2025 Fall term that would warrant consideration under the regulations, nor does it include documentation confirming that an unexpected circumstance prevented you from dropping ENGL 296 (F25) by the academic deadline. As such, I am unable to grant this request.
If you are concerned about the impact that this course has on your cumulative GPA, I would suggest that you consider repeating it in a future term. When repeating the exact same course code, both attempts will appear on your transcript however, only the higher grade will be included within the calculation of your cumulative GPA.
Going forward, please remember to pause and evaluate the impact of extenuating circumstances on your classes prior to the drop deadline of the term. If you have fallen behind in a course or find the material too difficult, you should drop the course by the deadline. The drop deadlines, outlined in the Important Dates section on the Faculty of Arts and Science web page, have been established to ensure fair and equitable treatment of all students.
Also, I suggest that you consider taking no more than 9.0 units per term for the upcoming Fall/Winter academic year and no more than 6.0 units in a Summer term.
As you continue in your studies, it is your responsibility to take the necessary steps to support the successful completion of your program and to maintain a GPA consistent with the requirements of your plan. You may find the following strategies helpful:
• Choose courses carefully. Achieving a higher grade in a repeated course can improve your GPA and support your return to and maintenance of good academic standing.
• Reflect on your program choice. Consider whether your current plan aligns with your interests and strengths. Your Academic Advisement Report in SOLUS can help you track requirements and plan future courses. Information on program options is available in the Academic Calendar: queensu.ca/academic-calendar/arts-science/schools-departments-programs/.
• Seek academic advising. You may consult an Academic Advisor through the Faculty Office (Dunning Hall) or online: queensu.ca/artsci/undergrad-students/student-services/academic-advising. Departmental advising may also be available.
• Use Student Academic Success Services (SASS). sass.queensu.ca/ offers workshops and supports to strengthen study skills and academic strategies.
• Access Student Wellness Services. queensu.ca/studentwellness/ provides counselling and support for managing personal challenges..
• Understand Academic Consideration. queensu.ca/artsci/accommodations outlines options available when experiencing short-term extenuating circumstances.
Additionally, if you wish to appeal this decision, you are welcome to submit an appeal to the Board of Studies. Appeals to the Board of Studies must be submitted within 10 business days of the date of this decision. Information on the appeal process and deadlines is available at queensu.ca/artsci/undergraduate/student-services/academic-petitions-and-appeals (click on Second Level). Dorit Naaman, PhD
