Thank you for your petition requesting to drop IDIS 173 and PSYC 271 (F25) after the academic deadline and for a deferral of the Final Exam in CHEM 112 (FW25/26) and PSYC 221 (W26). I have carefully reviewed your request and while I’m unable to grant all of these requests, I want to assure you that your circumstances were considered thoughtfully and with care as part of the decision-making process.
I will allow you to drop IDIS 173 and PSYC 271 (F25) after the academic deadline. Your grades in these courses will be replaced with a DR notation on your transcript once this has been processed by the University Registrar’s Office.
Regarding your requests for exam deferrals, Academic Appeal and Petition Regulation 1.7.1.6 (Requests for an Extension of an Exam Deferral) outlines that a student affected by extenuating circumstances who cannot write an exam as scheduled may request academic consideration and ask the course instructor for an exam deferral. Instructors may approve a deferral for up to one full term following the completion of a course. Where a student is unable to write the deferred exam due to the same or different extenuating circumstances, any request for an additional deferral must be made by petition to the Associate Dean (Academic) and must be supported by appropriate documentation. In addition, Academic Appeal and Petition Regulation 1.7.1.5 (To Request an Extension of the Deadline to Submit Incomplete Work) states that a student with extenuating circumstances who have been unable to complete the majority of the work in a class should consider a petition to drop a class after the deadline rather than an extension of the deadline to submit incomplete work.
I acknowledge the health-related challenges you described in your petition letter and am sincerely sorry that these circumstances had such a significant impact on your courses during the exam period. I appreciate the documentation you provided and am glad to hear that you are receiving appropriate support at this time.
The instructor of CHEM 112 (FW25/26) has confirmed that you did not complete the Fall or Winter term exams, which together are worth 60% of the graded components in the course. The instructor of PSYC 221 (W26) confirmed that you did not complete either midterm exam or submit any assignments during the Winter term.
Given your performance in the completed course components and the extent to which the majority of the course requirements remain incomplete, you are not eligible for an extension of an incomplete grade or an additional exam deferral under the regulations. This part of your request is therefore denied.
