I have carefully considered your appeal to receive Aegrotat standing in FREN 150B, GNDS 125, PHIL 115B, POLS 110B and PSYC 100B (W 2016). After reviewing your file I have decided the following:
1. I will grant your request for Aegrotat standing in FREN 150, GNDS 125 and POLS 110. Your grades in these courses will appear on your transcript as follows along with the notation €œAegrotat: Estimated Grade€:
FREN 150 B €œAegrotat: Estimated Grade€
GNDS 125 B- €œAegrotat: Estimated Grade€
POLS 110 C+ €œAegrotat: Estimated Grade€
As you know, Academic Regulation 10.3.1. states that, Aegrotat estimated standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed and passed at least 60 per cent of the work for a course, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond his or her control, is unable to complete all of the work of the course.€ As part of these appeals, the instructor must also indicate whether or not
the student has demonstrated an understanding of the class material (met the learning outcomes for the course) and provide an estimation of the student€™s grade in the class based on the work completed.
While your appeal does certainly describe circumstances that are extenuating in nature and there is supporting documentation to confirm them, because of the nature of the course content and the way in which PSYC 100 is structured, the only accurate way to assess whether or not the student has met the learning outcomes of the course is through writing the final exam. Therefore, because you have not written the final exam in PSYC 100, I cannot reasonably allow this request. However, the Psychology Department does allow students with documented extenuating circumstances write a deferred final exam in early September. Please contact Dr. Atkinson or Ms. Leverette in the Psychology departments to make these arrangements.
In the case of PHIL 115, the final essay is an essential part of this course designed to assess whether or not the student has met the learning outcomes. Because you have not yet completed this essential requirement, I cannot allow an Aegrotat grade for this course either but I understand that you have made arrangements with Dr. Salay to submit this work in August. Once it has been submitted, Dr. Salay will update your final grade and we will make the change to your transcript.
If you wish to appeal the Associate Dean€™s decision to the Board of Studies, you must submit an appeal to the Board of Studies within 21 days of the date this decision was sent.
