Decision Letter
Appeal Number: 2302
Decision Date: June 20, 2016
Associate Dean: Johanne Benard, Ph.D.
Student Name: Rachel Hunt
Student Email: 13reh6@queensu.ca
Dear Ms. Hunt:
I have carefully considered your appeal to waive the Faculty ruling that you be Required to Withdraw for One Year. After reviewing your file, I have decided to grant your request. You may now resume your studies at Queen's University.
I would like to note that overall, the appeal you presented is quite weak. While I acknowledge that you have a documented learning disability, you are registered with Accessibility Services and you received the appropriate academic accommodations in your courses. Your file also does not show any evidence that you sought any help from an academic advisor throughout the year, despite your ongoing struggles. However, I do recognize that the death of your close friend so close to the timing of your GPHY 102 would have undoubtedly had a significant impact on that course in particular. Given this, I would be willing to allow you to drop GPHY 102 past the academic deadline. If this course was dropped, your GPA would be 1.61 which would in turn remove the €œRequired to Withdraw for One Year€ ruling altogether. If you would like to accept this offer, please email asc.appeals@queensu.ca within 21 days of receiving this decision and we will make the appropriate changes to your transcript.
Upon returning to your studies I would strongly urge you to make use of the academic resources available on campus. Academic counselling is available through an advisor in the Faculty of Arts and Science Student Services Office (main floor Dunning Hall, phone 533-2470) or through your Plan department. The Learning Commons in Stauffer Library also provides a range of services, including workshops designed to improve study skills and develop strategies for meeting the demands of academic life. Further, the Student Wellness Centre located in the LaSalle Building at 146 Stuart Street (613-533-2506) offers personal and academic counselling free of charge to all Queen's students, as well as individual consultation to aid in coping with difficulties of a more personal nature. It is your responsibility to choose courses carefully, seek out the advice necessary to improve your academic performance, and maintain a GPA consistent with the requirements for successful completion of your plan.
If you have any questions about this decision, please feel free to contact the Faculty Office for advice or assistance. I wish you success in your future studies.
Yours sincerely,
Johanne Bénard, Ph.D.
