Decision Letter

Appeal Number: 2328
Decision Date: July 29, 2016
Associate Dean: Johanne Benard, Ph.D.
Student Name: Daniel Sheedy
Student Email: 13dbs2@queensu.ca

Dear Mr. Sheedy:

I have carefully considered your request to have your appeal to waive the requirement to withdraw for one year heard after the 21-day timeline for submission. Based on the circumstances you refer to in your letter of appeal, I have decided to waive the timeline.

Normally students are required to submit a separate appeal asking to waive the requirement to withdraw for one year; however, your current appeal contained all the information required for such an appeal so I have decided to move forward with a decision and grant your appeal to waive the requirement to withdraw for one year. However, I would like to point out that this is a lenient decision on my part and for the future, you are expected to be proactive and closely monitor your academic progress, manage your registration carefully and adhere to all academic deadlines, including the deadlines to drop courses.

I would also like to note that I did not hear your request to waive the 21-day deadline to hear an appeal to drop courses from the 2014-15 academic year. I would like to receive a separate appeal addressing this request and fully explaining why you were unable to make this appeal from the time these courses finished until the present day. You must also supply some supporting documentation to confirm the timeline (covering 2014 until present) of those extenuating circumstances that prevented you from appealing until now. If that appeal is granted, you will be permitted to submit your late appeal to drop courses late from the 2014/15 academic year.

Please read carefully the document to follow this letter. It contains important information concerning your current academic standing. If you have any questions about the information, please contact the Faculty Office to schedule an appointment with an academic advisor.

Upon returning to a regular course of study it is your responsibility to choose courses carefully, seek out the advice necessary to improve your academic performance, and maintain a GPA consistent with the requirements for successful completion of your plan. I hope that you will take advantage of the variety of support services available to you at Queen's. Academic counselling is available through an advisor in the Faculty of Arts and Science Student Services Office (main floor Dunning Hall, phone 533-2470) or through your Plan department. The Learning Commons in Stauffer Library also provides a range of services, including workshops designed to improve study skills and develop strategies for meeting the demands of academic life. Further, the Student Wellness Centre located in the LaSalle Building at 146 Stuart Street (613-533-2506) offers personal and academic counselling free of charge to all Queen's students, as well as individual consultation to aid in coping with difficulties of a more personal nature.

If you have any questions about this decision, please feel free to contact the Faculty Office for advice or assistance. I wish you success in your future studies.

Yours sincerely,

Johanne Bénard, Ph.D.
Associate Dean (Studies)
