Term: Winter

Category: Drop a course after the academic deadline

Dear Ms. Cameron:

I have carefully considered your appeal to drop PHIL 240 (W 2013) and PHIL 318 (W 2014) past the academic deadline. After reviewing your file, I have decided to grant your request with a condition in place.

I have reviewed your file in detail and it appears that you have appealed to drop a number of courses (2008 to 2013) past the academic deadline. I also see that Dr. Horton expressed some concern about the ongoing nature of your problems and asked to meet with you each term to ensure that your previous challenges didn€™t continue to negatively affect your academic record and you were dropping any courses as needed within the academic deadlines. There is no record of you reporting any issues with these particular courses during your meetings or correspondence with him. However, I can see that during the time of your last appeal those courses were incomplete and you planned to complete them.

As you know, the appeals system is not designed to compensate for circumstances that are ongoing in nature for which the student is unable or unwilling to effectively resolve or manage. However, I can see that you are actively working at managing your health issues and you have made some good progress so for this reason, I will grant your appeal. However, for the future if you find yourself falling behind or struggling academically, you must monitor your progress carefully, consider your ability to successfully complete the work required and drop any courses, as needed, within the academic deadlines.

To help you successfully progress through to graduation, I would like to continue with Dr. Horton€™s plan and meet with you each term to go over your academic plan, review your course load and ensure that you are comfortably managing your courses. You will have a hold placed on your SOLUS account that will prevent you from adding any courses on your own through SOLUS. Once we have met and reviewed your plan each term, the Faculty Office will assist you to enrol in courses. You may schedule appointments with me by contacting my Assistant, Katie Phillips, at f2deans@queensu.ca. Please schedule your appointments early into the registration periods to ensure that the courses you wish to take still have space available in them.

Please complete and return the €œReturn to Studies€ form found at: http://www.queensu.ca/artsci/sites/default/files/return_to_studies_form_2016_2.pdf so that we can activate your registration for the upcoming Fall and Winter terms, and arrange a meeting to plan your courses. You have 18.0 units of electives remaining to complete the requirements for a Bachelor of Arts (General) degree in Philosophy (six 3.0 unit courses).

If you wish to appeal the Associate Dean€™s decision to the Board of Studies, you must submit an appeal to the Board of Studies within 21 days of the date this decision was sent. Guidelines for appealing to the Board of Studies and the appeal form can be found at: http://www.queensu.ca/artsci/students-at-queens/academic-appeals (click on €œBoard of Studies€) Do not use the on-line application for this process. You may contact Mr. Harry Smith, Office of the Ombudsman for advice on matters of procedure and on obtaining a representative. His office is located in room 421 Robert Sutherland Hall and he can be reached by phone (533-6495) or e-mail (ombuds@queensu.ca).

Yours sincerely,

Sue Blake
