Dear Mr. Paitich:
I have carefully considered your appeal to waive the Faculty ruling that you be Required to Withdraw for a Minimum of Three Years as well as your request to drop HIST 243 (Winter 2016) past the academic deadline and receive Aegrotat standing in GPHY 257 (W 2016). My decision is as follows:
1. I will grant your request to drop HIST 243 past the academic deadline and receive Aegrotat standing in GPHY 257 based on the sudden death of your grandfather during the Winter 2016 exam period. Your final grade in GPHY 257 as confirmed by your instructor will be B-, and will be posted along with the notation €œAegrotat: Estimated grade€. These grade changes will raise your cumulative GPA to 0.838, still below the 1.60 required to remove the requirement to withdraw ruling.
2. I will deny your request to waive the requirement to withdraw for a minimum of three years. In making this decision, I have considered your current appeal and academic plan along with your entire record at Queen€™s and the recommendations made in your decision letters from previous appeals.
Due to extenuating circumstances over several years of study you have been granted late course drops for 9 courses, credit standing for one course and Aegrotat standing for one course. Even with these allowances for your previous personal issues, your GPA is 0.84, well below what is required to be released from academic probation and be eligible to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts General degree. You were required to withdraw for one year in May 2015, and I granted your appeal to return to studies based on your commitment to continue with treatment and assurances that your family problems had been resolved. I restricted you to a part-time load and warned you to take serious responsibility for your studies, including ensuring that any academic accommodations for your ADHD were in place.
While I acknowledge that your grandfather€™s death in April 2016 likely affected your performance in your exams, there is no explanation offered to account for the two Fs and D grade in your Fall term 2015 classes. Your continued poor performance simply does not warrant a return to studies at this time.
If you wish to appeal the Associate Dean€™s decision to the Board of Studies, you must submit an appeal to the Board of Studies within 21 days of the date this decision was sent. Guidelines for
