Dear Mr. Kim:
I have carefully considered your appeal to receive an extension of your incomplete grade in MATH 121 (FW 2013/14). After reviewing your file I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, the Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to the regulations will only be waived under exceptional circumstances. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by extenuating circumstances beyond his or her control.
Extenuating circumstances normally involve a significant physical or psychological event that is beyond your control and debilitating to your overall academic performance. Additionally, these kinds of extraordinary situations are normally supported by documentation from a professional.
While your appeal does certainly describe some circumstances that are extenuating in nature, there is no supporting documentation provided to confirm them. Unfortunately, without the presence of any documentation to confirm the full timeline and severity of your extenuating circumstances that were beyond your control and prevented you from writing your deferred exam on September 5, 2014, I cannot reasonably waive the Faculty Regulation. However, if you have been seeing a counsellor through Health, Counselling and Disability Services you may ask your counsellor to forward a note to support your appeal and confirm the details of your appeal letter. If this note is received within 21 days of receiving this decision I would be glad to review your appeal again with the documentation included.
