Dear Mr. Park:
I have carefully considered your appeal to add MATH 126 (FW 2014/15) after the academic deadline. After reviewing your file, I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, courses must be added on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under exceptional circumstances. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s ability to add a course within the deadline was significantly compromised by extenuating circumstances beyond his or her control.
The deadlines for adding courses have been designed and established in order to provide sufficient time for students to obtain the relevant permission, determine their interest in the course material, to consider their ability to handle each course, and to evaluate their overall workload. In the absence of extenuating circumstances, beyond your control, which would have prevented you from meeting the add deadline as published in the Arts and Science Calendar, I can not reasonably waive the Faculty Regulation.
Extenuating circumstances normally involve a significant physical or psychological event that is beyond your control and debilitating to your overall academic performance. Additionally, these kinds of extraordinary situations are normally supported by documentation from a professional.
Again, your appeal does not present any extenuating circumstances which would warrant waiving the academic regulations. Furthermore, your academic plan is weak. Your transcript shows that you failed MATH 121 twice before and your appeal does not explain in any detail how you plan to catch up on five weeks of missing work from the course, especially given the fact that you appear to struggle with the material. According to your academic advisement report you do require this course to graduate but you also require a further 12.0 units in elective courses as well. Therefore, you will not be eligible to graduate in Spring 2015, even if you did complete all of your ECON Plan requirements. I would suggest that you consider taking an additional 3.0 units in electives over the winter term and take MATH 121 and one elective course on-line over the 2015 summer term instead. I would also suggest that you schedule an appointment with an academic advisor in the Faculty Office to review your degree requirements in full and plan out when and how you will fulfil these remaining requirements.
