Decision Letter

Appeal Number: 3653
Decision Date: July 28, 2017
Associate Dean: Sue Blake
Student Name: Stephen Zhao
Student Email: 9syz@queensu.ca

Dear Mr. Zhao:

I have carefully considered your appeal to waive the Faculty ruling that you be Required to Withdraw for a Minimum of Three Years. After reviewing your file, I have decided to grant your request. You may now resume your studies at Queen's University.

I am allowing this return on studies solely on the basis of your circumstances surrounding your grandmother€™s passing. Your transcript and file continues to demonstrate that you are not seeking help when you are running into academic difficulties and you are not making decisions to drop courses within the academic deadlines. Over the next year you must meet with an academic advisor each term prior to the drop deadlines to discuss your progress and determine whether or not you should be dropping courses. I would also suggest that you meet with the Chair of Undergraduate Studies in the Physics Department and an advisor in Career Services to help you determine whether or not Physics is the best fit for you.

You require a further 27.0 units in PHYS to complete your degree requirements and you must raise your cumulative GPA to 1.60 (your Plan GPA is currently 1.86 and it must also be 1.60 or higher to be eligible to graduate.) To raise your cumulative GPA to 1.60 you must achieve an average grade of C or higher on your remaining courses (including your current summer courses). I would suggest that you meet with an advisor in the Physics department or an academic advisor in the Faculty Office to ensure that you have registered for the correct courses you require to graduate.

The document to follow this letter contains information concerning your probation standing. If you have questions about the information, please contact the Faculty Office to schedule an appointment with me or an academic advisor.

Upon returning to a regular course of study it is your responsibility to choose courses carefully, seek out the advice necessary to improve your academic performance, and maintain a GPA consistent with the requirements for successful completion of your plan. I hope that you will take advantage of the variety of support services available to you at Queen's. Academic counselling is available through an advisor in the Faculty of Arts and Science Student Services Office (main floor Dunning Hall, phone 533-2470) or through your plan department. The Learning Commons in Stauffer Library also provides a range of services, including workshops designed to improve study skills and develop strategies for meeting the demands of academic life. Further, the Student Wellness Services Centre located in the LaSalle Building at 146 Stuart Street (613-533-2506) offers personal and academic counselling free of charge to all Queen's students, as well as individual consultation to aid in coping with difficulties of a more personal nature.

If you have any questions about this decision, please feel free to contact the Faculty Office for advice or assistance. I wish you success in your future studies.

Yours sincerely,

Jill Atkinson, Ph.D.
Associate Dean (Studies)
