Dear Ms. Gao:

I have carefully considered your appeal to add GNDS 412 (W 2018) after the academic deadline. After reviewing your file, I have decided to deny your request.

The deadlines for adding courses have been designed and established in order to provide sufficient time for students to obtain the relevant permission, determine their interest in the course material, to consider their ability to handle each course, and to evaluate their overall workload.

While I acknowledge that you are close to graduation and I can understand the reasons for why you wish to take GNDS 412 this term, I cannot reasonably make a decision that is not in the best academic interests of the student. Taking 21.0 units of courses in a term is an excessively heavy load for any student and you are dealing with some significant family circumstances. In reviewing your transcript, it appears that this plan could also place you at a significant risk of not being eligible to graduate with your Honours degree.

Given your performance over the fall term, I am not convinced that you are currently able to manage this load. Your cumulative GPA is below the threshold to be eligible to graduate with your Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree and if you fail to meet this threshold by the end of winter term, you will no longer be eligible to proceed to an Honours degree. According to your current transcript, you need to earn an average grade of at least a C+ in your classes this term. Given these circumstances, I would strongly recommend that you consider dropping classes to avoid putting yourself at such risk. The last day to drop a winter term class is Friday, March 2. Please ensure that you make decisions and drop classes by this deadline.

If you wish to appeal the Associate Dean€™s decision to the Board of Studies, you must submit an appeal to the Board of Studies within 21 days of the date this decision was sent.
