Dear Ms. Nagra:
I have carefully considered your appeal to add PHAR 270, BCHM 270 and MICR 270 (W 2018) after the academic deadline. After reviewing your file, I must unfortunately deny your request.
As you know, courses must be added on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under extenuating circumstances. The deadlines for adding courses have been designed and established in order to provide sufficient time for students to obtain the relevant permission, determine their interest in the course material, to consider their ability to handle each course, and to evaluate their overall workload.
Extenuating circumstances normally involve a significant physical or psychological event that is beyond your control and debilitating to your overall academic performance. Additionally, these kinds of extraordinary situations are normally supported by documentation from a professional.
While I understand that you faced some significant challenges late into the fall term and early into the winter term that affected your ability to add classes, these are not the type circumstances that would warrant waiving the add deadlines. Registration for winter term classes opened in July during the course selection period and remained open from the end of August up to the add deadline on January 19, 2018. It appears that you had plenty of opportunity over the course of the fall term to organize your winter term registration and sort out any issues with your tuition payment.
Further, it is not in the student€™s best academic interests to add a class this late into the winter term. We are nearly at the halfway point of the winter term (halfway through week 5 of a 12 week course). At this point in the term, you will have missed a significant amount of the class material and opportunity to engage with these classes. It is unrealistic to expect that you will successfully complete these courses with a grade that is reflective of your usual academic performance and given that you do not have a specific reason for requiring these particular courses at this time, I would advise you to take them during another term when you are able to fully participate and engage.
For your information, PHAR 270 and BCHM 270 are being offered this summer term and registration on SOLUS is currently open. I would encourage you to review the online course offerings at www.queensu.ca/cds.
