Dear Ms. Ro:
I have carefully considered your request to have your appeal heard after the one-term timeline for submission. Based on the circumstances you refer to in your letter of appeal, I have decided the following:
1. I will waive the timeline and grant your request to drop ARTH 253 (F 2016) and ENGL 215 (FW 2016/17) past the academic deadline as well as receive Credit standing in ENGL 290 (W 2017). Although there was no documentation submitted with this appeal, there was documentation in your file from an earlier appeal indicating that you were seen for mental health issues from February to April 2017; thus, I will allow these late course drops and credit grades from this time period.
2. I will waive the timeline but I must unfortunately deny your request to drop ARTH 215 (W 2016), ENGL 215 (S 2017) and CLST 102 (F 2017) and receive Credit standing in ARTH 212 (W 2016). Although your file shows that you were seeing a counsellor from February to April 2017, by April of that year you were aware of your condition and aware of your academic limitations and need to seek academic accommodation. At this point in time, it is no longer appropriate to use the appeal system to retroactively remove failures and low grades. Despite being on academic probation, you chose to take 3 6.0 courses in Summer 2017 achieving Cs in two of them. Your pattern of marks in summer and lack of supporting documentation during this period do not support retroactively removing your lowest grades.
Students with chronic health issues are expected to monitor their health and determine by Week 8 of each term whether or not to drop any courses and take appropriate action. For the future, I would strongly recommend that you consider reducing your course load, seek academic advice before the end of Week 8 each term to review your progress in each class and determine whether or not your mental health issues are affecting your academic performance and if so, drop courses as needed.
If you wish to appeal the Associate Dean€™s decision to the Board of Studies, you must submit an appeal to the Board of Studies within 21 days of the date this decision was sent.
