I have carefully considered your appeal to drop MATH 110 and MATH 120 (FW 2016/17) past the academic deadline. After reviewing your file I have decided to deny your request.
As you know, courses must be dropped on SOLUS within the published deadlines. The Academic Regulations (Appeal of Academic Decisions, IIIb) stress that exceptions to this will only be waived under extenuating circumstances. The integrity of Arts and Science transcripts in general would be greatly diminished if the Faculty were to effect changes to students€™ records without clear and compelling documentation indicating that the student€™s performance was significantly compromised by circumstances beyond his or her control.
The deadlines for dropping courses have been designed and established in order to provide sufficient time for students to determine their interest in the course material, to consider their ability to handle each course, and to evaluate their overall workload.
Extenuating circumstances normally involve a significant physical or psychological event that is beyond your control and debilitating to your overall academic performance. Additionally, these kinds of extraordinary situations are normally supported by documentation from a professional.
While it is clear that you had a difficult first year of university, there is no documentation supplied from a healthcare professional to confirm the full timeline and severity of a health condition beyond your control that directly impacted your academic performance. Your transcript serves as an official university record and it cannot be altered based on a student€™s self-report. Moving forward, I would encourage you to seek some mental health support to help you cope with your anxiety. The Student Wellness Services Centre on campus at 146 Stuart St. (613-533-2506) offers a variety of services free of charge to students including individual counselling, wellness workshops and accessibility/accommodations. I would also urge you to closely monitor your health and if you feel that you are not able to keep up with the work or if you are not achieving a level of success you are satisfied with, to drop any courses as needed within the drop deadline in Week 8 of each term.
